France on foot

Despite the economic downturn I have resolved to plan a walking holiday in France. A Google search using terms walking holidays france produced 446,000 hits in 0.24 seconds.  I kicked off with http://www.sentiersdefrance.com/accueil_en.php?id=19 - Sentiers de France because it claimed to have over 80 self-guided walking tours. The self-guided bit appealed as I'm not fond of managed tour groups.  However, on looking more closely self-guided is a bit of a misnomer as in reality tours are selected from predetermined routes and you are still paying a tour company quite exhorbitant amounts.  So, maybe this is not what I really want (especially in straightened economic circumstances).  I will have to do a lot more homework!

My, you have done a lot! Have you considered a river/canal boat tour as an alternative?

I'm beginning to think that a leisurely drift down a river might be more relaxing! Perhaps a bit of both?
